Breakdown In NASA Internal Communications

A NASA LaRC Employee notes: “How is it we did not receive this memo from our managers and instead are pointed to it located on SpaceRef.com???? Did Dr. Griffin assume this was going to go out to all employees or was this limited to only high level managers, etc. Good communication still not a way of life inside NASA?”

Good Afternoon,

Per the RTD Directors, you are encouraged to read the below url “NASA Internal Memo: Message from Mike Griffin” and provide thought provoking ideas and topics for our discussion at the RTD meeting on Friday, June 15 at 1:00 p.m. in the RCC and PYT.

Editor’s note: This message to all NASA employees from Mike Griffin was sent out mid day on Friday, 10 June, from NASA HQ. It would seem that this “high” priority message was treated in different ways at different centers. While some centers, such as MSFC and GSFC, sent it out within a few hours of when they got it, other centers, such as ARC, waited several days (below). In other cases, such as LaRC (above), mid-level managers waited many days and then decided that NASA Watch/SpaceRef was the best way to get the message out to their employees (or perhaps they first saw it on NASA Watch). This one manager in particular does not seem to know that Friday is 17 – not 15 June.

What is especialy odd is that a hi-tech agency such as NASA can’t figure out a way to allow its Administrator to send a simple email to all NASA employees. As such, it would seem that NASA’s “Strategic Communications” effort is quite broken.
