"NASA Administrator Charles Bolden will take part in the Wernher von Braun Symposium and dinner held at the Von Braun Center and visit four local schools. In the morning, Bolden will visit Lincoln Elementary School, Columbia High School and Huntsville Center for Technology. Bolden is also scheduled to visit Horizon Elementary School in Madison."

Is anyone else alarmed that Marshall is being given responsibility for ESAS-2? MSFC has more of a vested interest in the current Constellation plan than anyone. Is there any organization with a bigger conflict of interest?

That is a valid concern, Chris. All I can say is that, when I expressed this concern on NASA Spaceflight.com's forums, several people stated that MSFC has changed a lot since Dr. Griffin and Dr. Cook's departures. There is a new regime in place and this has led to a slightly more relalistic corporate mindset at Marshall.
Hopefully, this will be borne out with a fact-based assessment of the benefits and drawbacks of the various options open under the current budgetary environment.

Word is that General Bolden has ordered MSFC to carry out what is effectively an ESAS-2 study, specifically looking at HLV alternatives. Read more here: http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2009/10/bolden-directs-msfc-special-team-to-evaluate-hlv-alternatives
The word is that all alternatives short-listed by Augustine will be evaluated. That will include the downsized Ares-V, DIRECT and the SD-HLLV. Will it be a fair evalution or has General Bolden already got a preconceived conclusion? We will have to see. Watch this space!
