Video: Masten's First Flight Today

Unfortunately, Unreasonable Rocket had a bad day today. They made Level 1 attempts today. In the first attempt their lander barely got off the ground, wobbled around while sliding laterally, then tipped over.

There didn't seem to be any damage, so a second attempt was made. This time they had a depressurization failure around the time when they were going to ignite.

They were able to repressurize again for a third attempt, but the same thing happened as on the first attempt, but at least it didn't tip over this time. The team decided to pack it up for the day after this.

There is some controversy about Masten's attempt. John Carmack doesn't think they should have been allowed a third day to attempt to qualify for Level 2, since they originally had been allowed only two days. I know Masten had to get permission from the judges to try again, but the decision to allow extra time was unanimous. Masten hadn't been able to make any flights on the first day, only the second day, with fire damage preventing them from attempting the return leg.

The LLC was pretty fun, and it's great what Masten and Armadillo have been able to do, and I still hope Unreasonable Rocket can make things happen tomorrow.

Now that Armadillo and Masten have qualified and Unreasonable Rocket may attempt tomorrow, does anyone know who is leading for first? My understanding is that 1st place goes to who ever gets closest to landing center. Does anyone know how close Armadillo and Masten came to center?

I believe last I heard ealier today that Masten was closer meaning they are in the lead.
