Discovery Arrives at Dulles
Space Shuttle Discovery: Old Friend, New Neighbor
“Space Shuttle Discovery arrived at her new home today – the National Air and Space Museum at the Udvar-Hazy Center, adjacent to Dulles International Airport outside of Washington, DC. While the news of her arrival had been circulated here in Washington for some time, it would seem that many people made their decision to see her arrive at the last minute.”
I have photographs of the Capitol flyby up on Flickr. You can find them at Discovery Capitol Flyby 2012.
Great to see the Shuttle over the Washington DC area.
Does the flight symbolize the “End of the Age of Discovery” in the United States?
No. It represents the end of Shuttle era. It’s a pause for now, hopefully to be followed by once again flying beyond the circles the Shuttle flew, accompanied by private firms providing transport to LEO, if not more, of US astronauts and more.
Here is a good one of it over the Capitol too

Can they land Endeavor at or flyby Ames on it’s way to LA?
that would be very cool. I worked at Ames for 12 years before getting transferred to Dryden in 1996. I was fortunate enough to see 5 Shuttle landings there and one launch (at Kennedy).
Everyone who wants to should be able to see the orbiter flying by on the piggyback w/747. It it it truly breathtaking
Don’t count on it. They didn’t fly by Langley and we were certainly on the way from Florida to DC.
