    Really cool idea.  Perhaps some sort of chemical analysis could be added to it–something like pH detection, or conductivity measurements, or density (with ultrasound?).  They don’t have to stick to the old paradigm of having no external sensors as a part of the device.  If you have to bring a small bag of sensor heads that you can change out, the convenience of having this kind of a multi-tool sensor far outweighs the extra hassle of a few sensor headss in a bag in your pocket.
