Survey: Obama Would Protect Earth From Angry ETs Better Than Romney

Two-Thirds of Americans Think Barack Obama Is Better Suited to Handle an Alien Invasion Than Mitt Romney
“In regards to national security, nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans think Barack Obama would be better suited than fellow presidential candidate Mitt Romney to handle an alien invasion. In fact, more than two in three (68%) women say that Obama would be more adept at dealing with an alien invasion than Romney, vs. 61 percent of men. And more younger citizens, ages 18 to 64 years, than those aged 65+ (68% vs. 50%) think Romney would not be as well-suited as Obama to handle an alien invasion.”
Searching for ET, But No Evidence Yet, OSTP
“Thank you for signing the petition asking the Obama Administration to acknowledge an extraterrestrial presence here on Earth. The U.S. government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged any member of the human race. In addition, there is no credible information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public’s eye. However, that doesn’t mean the subject of life outside our planet isn’t being discussed or explored.”

If you think about it, if there was a kid in outer-space doing a science project on human-beings, he’d have to say we’re all crazy.

Yes, but Romney would fare better against Zombies, so it is a wash.

Is there life elsewhere in the universe? There are two possibilities, and that’s as much as we know for certain. I think it’s an important question, one that should be asked. But for those who are seriously looking at the situation, it must be extremely frustrating when so many people reflexively turn the issue into bad jokes. Combine that with the number of people who, to my amazement, readily believe in some of the most ridiculous “extraterrestrial” and “fantasy” situations, and it must be heartbreaking to try to seriously investigate the ET question with people.

I wouldn’t be surprised if passing ETs spent a couple of hours watching our afternoon TV shows or reading our newsstand “True Stories” magazines and wisely decided to just keep quiet and be on their way. The question I have to ask is, if ETs did show up at our door step, between the senile politicians, the greedy businessmen, and the fanatics (who always knew it was true), how badly would we screw up our first encounter? Not a very pretty picture.

I find it disappointing that people/organizations actually go through the process of doing these silly and meaningless polls — ask random people a controversial or ambiguous question, without providing any context, don’t give them any time to think about it (we want lots of answers, not good answers), and then draw meaningless conclusions based on simple arithmetic. Construct the question(s) with a little thought and you can guarantee to get the answer(s) that you’re looking for. You can easily start major, and false, social controversy this way, or largely sway public opinion in an important matter, all based on BS. You’d think by now that people would be smart enough to say nothing except “no comment,” rather than contribute to a farce; but no such luck.

Many poll questions are “no win” questions. They remind me of Groucho Marx’s famous game show question: “Answer Yes or No; Have you stopped beating your wife?” Being asked about ETs is much the same; no matter what you answer, you’re going to get clobbered.

Who wrote the short story of two spaceships that meet far far away from their home solar systems. They have no way of knowing if the other is hostel or not or if he is more powerful and will follow them back the others planet. After looking at each other they each decide the best course of action is to destroy each other. Do we really want to find intelligent life out there? I know there is. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that. But maybe a safe distance is a good thing for all concerned.

Lookout mars bugs we are headed your way. Lol

Well said. One of my concerns, and you touch on it, is that there are those that have worked very hard answering this question and when they do discover something, it will be yanked away. I don’t remember if the book had this sub-plot, but the movie Contact clearly shows this happening.

It is also sad that it is National Geographic that is running this survey and UFO series. Wiki says the channel is owned by Fox, which might explain things. I wonder if the people at the magazine facepalm at the stuff they see on “their” network?

Like Noah, I see the novelty of the question as a way of asking, “Who do you trust in an emergency”, “who do you trust to deal with foreigners”, and “who runs the military better”, but by short-circuiting the usual political self-identification you get a more honest answer.

(It’s like I’ve noticed on some survivalist sites, using the idea of preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse when they stock and plan. It’s not because they believe in zombies, it’s just a way of mentally challenging pre-conceptions. The same gear is useful for anything from a natural disaster, to a riot, to just camping, but is more generalised than any single one.)

Seth Shostak, one of panel discussons at SETIcon last weekend, said many times Hollywood consults him and asks, “What does an alien look like?” and “What kinds of weapons would aliens use?” He humorously says (and very obvious to anyone that seriously follows astronomy, space, etc.) he doesn’t know. But if need go give a description, I say go with standard ISO-9000 space alien (we all know what that is).

Or is it Josh Brolin playing Romney playing Tommy Lee Jones? Coz I think Brolin could totally pull that off.

“The U.S. government has no evidence “…   See?  They’re denying it already.
As long as we’re doing black-and-white movie posters (get it?) why not a stylized version of 48 hours?

Colbert just covered this- including using a similar Obama/Spock image to one that was posted here earlier.

No-one seems to worry about the return of the Great Gazoo – that little trouble-making alien with the green helmet in the Flintstones. We are all doomed.

“In regards to national security, nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans think Barack Obama would be better suited than fellow presidential candidate Mitt Romney to handle an alien invasion.”

I thought Romney’s friends said Obama was an Alien? I heard they had proof on fox news! Obama is the guy running the country now, right?

Well since I’m a construction guy  maybe I should vote for Romney. Doesn’t his friends all want to build a giant wall on our southern border to keep out all those aliens we don’t like, that keep taking away all the jobs we use to have, that are disappearing.

” In fact, more than two in three (68%) women say that Obama would be more adept at dealing with an alien invasion than Romney, vs. 61 percent of men. An invasion?
Well Obama he has proved how good he is with drones. He’s a tough Predator Guy!!!
For each bad alien killed how many more Aliens join up for the Invasion?
I saw the queen of England last night, on the teli in Alien Irish territory shaking hands with ex alien terrorist Martin McGuinness??? How did they pull that off?? Maybe it’s because they didn’t have drones back then!

Imagine how Ireland and England would get along today had England used drones on those  Irish terrorist Aliens all these years.
Have we started using drones in mexico to kill drug lords yet?

How should we build up for this Alien invasion?

More tax money for arsenal Space?

More walls on our southern border? Why not our northern border? There are aliens up there too. Right Steve? You planning to invade too?

I’ll take a job building some walls. Or can they build walls with just robots now? No human help wanted?

Well I don’t need the government to tell me about aliens, I see them here all the time taking our jobs. Threatening our one true religion. Well enough said, time to tune in to Fox news to see what they have to say about this.

    Lol

PS yes Steve, as you have said, it’s all about people.

    First things first!

You think we really are ready to meet Intelligent life????

    Lol

Lol the above comment is a joke. It’s always dangerous to use sarcasm on NASA WATCH lol

If alien invasion nether Barack Obama or Mitt Romney would be of any use other then throwing them at them.

They would be so advanced that you would have only two choices kiss there ass and hope there spare you or bend over a kiss your ass good bye.

Er, ETs can’t get to us here, or else they’d have arrived already and an invasion response would be a part of history.

For the same constraints of physics and economics, we’ll never even be able to have a productive conversation with those ETs that do exist so there’s no point in speculating.

Can we get back to real science and exploration now?
