Video: A Toy Train in Space
“On Aug 24th 2012 we sent my son’s favorite train “Stanley” to space in a weather balloon with a HD camera and an old cell phone for GPS. He was recovered 27 miles away in a corn field and we got some great footage of the trip. This video documents the journey from liftoff to landing.”
Keith’s note: This gives me yet another excuse to link to my all-time favorite space video Reach – which resulted from a NASA competition. True to form, NASA promptly forgot about this video as soon as it was made.

One hour going up and 20 minutes coming back down.  I noticed that Stanley lost his smile for a while once reentry started, which I thought was a great touch.  I’m sure I would have done the same thing in his place.  Great job Stanley.

    Keith,

I completely agree with you on this issue, but there’s a catch.  NASA can’t run adverts on TV, and doesn’t have the necessary money even if they could.  So, in all seriousness, what could they have done with Reach, or any other video, other than post it on YouTube, the land of 120 million videos?  What could NASA (or the rest of us) do with things like this video to communicate with the people a large, instead of just the already converted?
