Live on SpaceRef Business – NASA’s Asteroid Initiative Industry & Partner Day
Event: NASA’s Asteroid Initiative Industry & Partner Day
Time: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. EDT
This morning “NASA will host an event in which experts will provide details about NASA’s asteroid initiative, including the observation campaign, the orbital tracking, robotic components, the human elements, and enhanced focus on planetary defense. We will describe our upcoming planning timeline and clearly identify opportunities and processes for providing input into our planning. During this public forum, NASA will also release a Request for Information (RFI) to seek new ideas for mission elements and describe the process for submitting your ideas to NASA so that NASA teams may consider your innovative solutions and/or participation.
Marc’s note: We’ll be broadcasting this event on SpaceRef Business starting at 9:30 with video feed courtesy NASA. Some in Congress would like to see the Asteroid initiative shelved. This is your chance to see what NASA has planned and how industry will be involved. As well, tomorrow is the NASA Authorization Act of 2013 hearing of the Subcommittee on Space. This should be an interesting few days.

isn’t this a dead end? hasn’t congress just about said they are not going to authorize this asteroid thing?

Yup. I think it is pretty much dead. Going to a Dead Rock is a waste.
I’d rather spend the money hunting for fossils on Mars!!!

One argument for ARM is that it will bring more than just NASA money. Initially it is private investors. If mining asteroids prove valuable, then that brings in additional revenue as an ongoing business initiative.

ARM was envisioned, in part, as the cheapest mission possible beyond LEO that was more than an Apollo 8 mission. No gravity well.

AFAIK, there are still no manned missions beyond LEO on the table.

Mars fossils could potentially bring in non-NASA money, but mainly if investors can return them to Earth and sell them. Of course, we need to find them first 🙂

It’s not over until it’s over.
A draft Bill is not a legal directive; it’s just a bunch of people thinking out loud. Even if/when it becomes a real Bill and goes to a vote it means nothing unless it gets a sufficient percentage of votes. I think you could just as easily designate this as uncertainty about the next steps in their on-going obstructionism — when in doubt, buy time. No wonder everything takes so long.
