Trailer for Cosmos the TV Series [Watch], SpaceRef
At Comic-Con in San Diego this past weekend Neil deGrasse Tyson introduced the first trailer for the Cosmos, a 13 part miniseries he’ll be hosting on Fox next year made in conjunction with National Geographic.
The series is a remake of the immensely popular 1980’s series when Carl Sagan was host and which aired on PBS in September 1980 through December that year.

Marc’s note: A reader points out that the official trailer from Fox is out where you can hear Sagan and Tyson talking. I’ve updated the video link.

Really surprised there aren’t any comments about this. It looks positively awesome, and I can’t think of a better person to do it than Dr. Tyson. I was about 10 at the time the original series came on the air, and it deeply impacted me in ways that I can’t describe. To this day, my wife says that I talk a little bit like Carl Sagan when she watches the old shows on Netflix. I am really looking forward to this new show, and I just can’t think of anyone better than Dr. Tyson to continue Dr. Sagan’s legacy.

These are certainly different times. Back in 1980 Cosmos relied heavily on the new Voyager and Viking missions along with a lot of science history.

I remember one segment where approx 50 yr. old Sagan told a bunch of elementary school kids that by the time they were his age they’d know if other planets were out there in the universe. Well, it only took until those kids were 20-25 years old. Just shows how much and how fast we’re learning about our universe.

Anyway, there’s been tons of Cosmos type space-science-astronomy series since then e.g, Through the Wormhole, How the Universe Works, The Universe, Hyperspace..and on and on and on. Even degrasse Tyson has done Origins.

I don’t know how this new Cosmos will stand out among all the rest. I guess if they’re remaking the style of the original it’ll be at least great to compare the two Cosmos 35 years apart. And even I will admit the first Cosmos is really outdated.

The new show will be must-see TV, that’s for sure!

I think this is a very good development. The original show with Sagan influenced my interest in Astronomy and Space Exploration from an early age, as did 2001 A Space Odyssey. Cosmos and 2001 – plus the influence of my Uncle who was an aerospace engineer with NASA during Apollo and the Shuttle – ‘switched me on’ to Space, and I’ve been switched on ever since. Hopefully this show will switch on a new generation and get them to realise how important exploring Space is, and why we must continue.

I never saw cosmos. But I did read his book pale blue dot and it changed my views on everything.
