Is Charlie Bolden Going To Visit China?

Keith’s note: According to this Facebook post: “On September 21 the Space Generation Advisory Council is hosting its SGC Gala Dinner in Beijing, China. Enjoy a nice evening with young professionals, students, and current space leaders from around the world, as well as our featured speaker, Charles Bolden, NASA Administrator.”
Isn’t NASA supposed to be avoiding interactions with China? Or is Bolden just going to phone his speech in? I wonder if Frank Wolf knows about this.

“avoiding interactions with China” The country with the largest exploration history in Space should not intact with the most promising newcomer? Not to allow Chinese spies to get all the informations they want is OK, but high level contact was always necessary. Even in the coldest war times there were contacts between US and USSR and nobody questioned that.
To criticizes Bolden for contact to China is the same narrow minded state as asking how he is coming from Greenbelt to Washington DC and if this was a official or private trip.

I never said that he should not go. Please tell me where I said that ….. This is not a matter of logic or pragmatism but rather something imposed on the Administration by Congress. Go yell at them.

Do we have to let him back in? Can’t we change the locks or something while he’s over there?

How about Frank Wolf? Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s ever asked the NASA IG whether chow mein has been or still is on the ISS menu!

Bolden’s visit to China is in conjunction with the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), which is now in its 64th year. This conference is huge in scope, and is ordinarily attended by heads of all the world’s space agencies. The event is always held in a different location, and this year it is in Beijing. Incidentally, NASA has cut way back on its attendance this year. Everyone in the agency is well aware of the restrictions on conference attendance, international travel and, of course, interactions with China.

Are you an agency spokesperson? How do you know that ” Everyone in the agency is well aware of the restrictions on conference attendance, international travel and, of course, interactions with China.”

That facebook message you mention in particular, is for an event of an american and international non profit organisation, that organises its annual event every year in a different country. He is coming to address young professionals and students, on the margins of the IAC, the biggest space event of this kind of the year. Next year is going to be… CANADA 🙂

The event is in China. Charlei Bolden will be in China. No one cares if he goes to Canada. They do care about ANY interaction he has with China.
