President Barack Obama Recognizes NASA Employees’ Public Service
“David Lavery, program executive at NASA Headquarters in Washington, and scientist William Borucki of NASA’s Ames Research Centers in Moffett, Field, Calif., were the agency’s honorees. Lavery and his Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) team received the Science and Environment medal for their work on the successful development, launch, landing, operations, and science activities of the Curiosity rover. Borucki was honored as a finalist for the Career Achievement medal for his visionary work on the Kepler mission launched in 2009. The mission was designed to search for potentially habitable extra-solar planets or exoplanets, which are planets outside our solar system.”

Both gentlemen will surely describe their honor in terms of a team effort but Borucki in particular is so well deserving for his persistence over a decade to prove his concept and gain funding. The assortment of space telescopes that have studied primordial light of the Universe has changed our understanding and revealed new mysteries but Borucki’s Kepler proved once and for all that planets are common throughout the Universe and outnumber the stars. Our imaginations are now free to look up and count the solar systems throughout the sky and all the possibilities that we are not alone, that we are rather one of countless numbers of life baring worlds throughout space and time.

I have had the pleasure over the years to work with Dave Lavery. He is a scholar, a gentleman, a visionary, and a humble genius with a sense of humor! It is good to see an award of this kind go to a man who so deserves it. If only we could again find the flamingo on the net… 🙂
