Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) won’t seek reelection, Washington Post
“Longtime Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) announced Tuesday that he won’t seek reelection in 2014. Wolf’s departure gives Democrats a great pickup opportunity in 2014. Wolf has easily held down the Northern Virginia suburbs and exurbs for decades, despite their increasing purple tone.”

Just a wild guess, but it might have been news of (1) Pad 39A going to SpaceX and (2) the Chinese Moon buggy landing coming within a week of each other – two of Mr Wolf’s trigger points – that finally did him in.

      Points for entertainment though. πŸ™‚

I too have given my best wishes for his retirement. For example when I saw a meteor last night. </hyperbole>

Oh no! Without him to watch over NASA, China will steal the technology to successfully build and launch an autonomous lunar lander. We are doomed!

      Finals???

I wonder what percentage of people that comment here have children that are taking finals or their children are way past the age of taking finals.

      Good luck anyway

Keith did acknowledge people who are in the age of taking finals as one of the audiences of this site on the advertisement page. Besides, there are people who went back to school in their old ages.

Welcome Wendy! It’s great to see the dream of space exploration does not live in just us old guys and is being carried on by the younger generation! I see the same enthusiasm in the young engineers I work with and I think it’s terrific!.

THANK YOU!!! See ya don’t let the damned door hit ya! Maybe there is reason for hope in Manned Space flight yet.

Great news, but we should not get overly excited, because another clueless representative could fill his shoes.

And this next clueless Senator what if he or she watched the same late night TV show which I watched where a Young good looking astronaut doing PR for NASA explained how not only is NASA helping commercial company’s build rockets to get us back into LEO again, but they are also building the SLS and Orion capsule to EXPLORE πŸ™‚ How can NASA hope for any meaningful change Like affordable Space, when their own PR hides the important facts.

When does good pubic relations become deceit and cover for a lie??

I realize that NASA is not responsible for the Senate Launch System but if they continue to sell it, they to are responsible for not helping man get off this rock and their own demise.

NASA old guard is absolutely responsible for SLS (and that includes Charlie Bolden). They went behind the backs of the Administration to make deals with companies that were sole-sourced the work to buy-off Congress to keep CxP contracts going – which is what SLS/Orion is today. They were dragged into commercial cargo and crew by Garver and others, but their focus is SLS/Orion.

Hard to believe that such intelligent knowledgable people can not understand that human space flight must be as affordable as possible.

And once these agreements had been made I’m guessing that since it was about jobs in a bad economy. Obama had little choice but to sign off on it/SLS and take the blame right???

The evidence is clear. The Administration did not request these programs in their budget – the opposite. At great political risk, they cancelled them. Charlie Bolden was widely reported to be working with JSC Director Mike Coats, Marshall Director, Robert Lightfood and KSC Director Bob Cabana, on “plan B” – which was SLS/Orion. Bolden recently stated to an NRC Committee that “SLS was created by NASA, not by Congress”. Since this was created during the time the Administration had cancelled the program, that means they went behind their backs. No question industry was orchestrating along with NASA to keep their contracts. Aerospace lobbyists swung into high gear to keep those contracts.

There must be two different Charlie Boldens, then, because I watched one of them, more than once, have to stand in front of a Congressional committee and face questions about SLS which he couldn’t answer, because he had no idea why NASA was building SLS. Both the alleged need for SLS, and the design specs and contractor limitations for SLS were mandated by actions of Congress, not NASA, and not the White House. This has been well known all along and was kicked around here on NASA Watch and elsewhere for months. You can’t reinvent the past just because you don’t happen to like some of the current NASA brass. So your clear evidence is not clear at all; it’s not even accurate. SLS and Orion both were mandated to NASA, and even today no one at NASA can answer the two biggest questions: What exactly are SLS and Orion to be used for? and Where is the money coming from for any SLS/Orion mission(s)? They can’t answer these questions because SLS wasn’t their idea; it came from Congress. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t managers at NASA who are now promoting the SLS program β€” that ‘s their job. They’ve been told that NASA is building this damn thing, period. They can either get behind the official program they’ve been assigned or they can quit and try to find a job elsewhere. Not much of a decision these days when so many people are looking for work.

Chairman Wolf doesn’t hate China. He doesn’t like the fact that their government doesn’t respect human rights. There is a difference.

Not so. In his persecution of Bo Jiang on false charges, he personally ordered the arrest of an innocent man. It is Frank Wolf who does not respect human rights.. In the false and unspeakable allegations that got him kicked off the foreign relations committee he proved again that he has no regard for truth.

This probably sounds strange, but I follow this site daily, read the house and senate appropriations committees bills and memos, and have come to the conclusion that Rep. Wolf is a friend of NASA. I think we will be very lucky if there is another Representative that will try to maintain a balanced NASA portfolio. I will miss him.

JSC Could Benefit From Wolf’s Retirement
    http://www.houstonchronicle

“The Houston Chronicle (12/20, Berger, 2.26M), in an article titled β€œJSC might soon gain a powerful ally in D.C.,” reports that with Rep. John Culberson the current favorite to replace the retiring Rep. Frank Wolf as chairman of the appropriations committee that funds NASA, the political outlook for the Johnson Space Center is β€œon the rise.”
