One. Amazing. Person.

“Just a Flesh Wound”, Miles O’Brien
“I wish I had a better story to tell you about why I am typing this with one hand (and some help from Dragon Dictate). A shark attack would be interesting. An assassination attempt would be intriguing. Skydiving mishaps always make for good copy. An out-of-control quad copter that turns on its master would be entertaining (and would come complete with a grim, potentially viral, video). No, the reason I am now one-handed is a little more prosaic than those scenarios.”
Keith’s note: I was stunned, then horrified, then … well, not at all surprised about my friend Miles O’Brien’s recent mishap and how he has been dealing with it. I am in complete awe of him right now.

That’s some seriously bad luck to get that just from bumping his arm hard. I hope he looks into some prosthetics – they’re getting pretty good now.

One thing that didn’t seem to even blink during all of this is his observant viewpoint, and his instinctive reaction to report what is going on around him, or in this case to him. I expect that we will be hearing some very interesting stories in the coming months and years and I think we are going to learn a lot, yes about things like high-tech prosthetics, but also about working your life to the fullest regardless of what obstacles might come your way.

His mental attitude is impressive. The reasons for the complication during surgery are unclear, except that any delay in treating compartment syndrome increases the risk.

I just read about this on CNN and came here knowing it would be up. I’m a fan of his and wish him a speedy recovery and every other good thing.

That blog entry is straight ahead dispassionate reporting, just what we expect from Mr. O’Brien, who gives new meaning to the word ‘aplomb’.

    What an stunning guy.

This is just one more reason to hold Miles in great admiration. What a nasty setback and such stunning calm in the face of it all.

As Steve P notes, no doubt we will see some fascinating and enlightening reporting going forward inspired by this new turn.

I’d wish Miles strength and courage, but it’s clear he already has more than any 10 of us put together.

Having lost a leg 5 years ago, I would like to assure Mr. O’Brien that you still CAN use the ‘shark bite’ story…especially with little kids.

…and when Hallowe’en rolls around, the Merle from Walking Dead is a cinch.
