Would You Spend 7 Cents To Send Something to Mars?

Mars mission cost citizen less than BEST bus fare, Times of India
“How much did the Rs 450-crore India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) cost an individual? Believe it or not it is less than the minimum BEST bus fare. While the minimum fare is Rs 6, each Indian on the other hand has spent just Rs four for the Mars mission. This unbelievable fact that the mission cost each citizen of this country a pittance was revealed to TOI by Isro chairman K Radhakrishnan recently. He said, “The fact it cost each person Rs 4 was moreover just a one-time payment. It was neither weekly, monthy or yearly.”
Keith’s note: Rs 4 = $0.07, India has 1.237 billion people. If they can go to Mars for 7 cents each, I wonder what they could do for 10 cents each …

Very impressive. Compliments to the Indians for this investment. It still has to get there and work but their science-driven choices are to be commended. Perhaps for the 10 cents/per they could do a deep-space mission…

The cost of the Indian space effort is much criticized in India; no doubt this is an effort to shine the apple.

They should calculate it based on the number of Indian that have jobs and not living in poverty.

good thing they also have the billions Great Britain funnels to them for their space program, considering the UK had to all but abandon their own for lack of fundings

An interesting comment, and one I’d not heard. I wonder if you could point me where I could learn more about GB involvement?

The UK does not send aid to India to fund its space program. The debate is over whether the UK needs to continue providing (minimal – about 20p/person/year) development aid to a country that is able to budget $1B/year for its space program, among other things.
