House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology Marks Up NASA Reauthorization

“The NASA Authorization Act of 2014 continues the consistent guidance Congress has given to NASA for nearly a decade by reaffirming a stepping stone approach to exploration in a go-as-you-can-afford-to-pay manner by developing an exploration roadmap. It supports the development on the Space Launch System and the Orion Crew Vehicle to push the boundaries of human exploration, and focuses NASA’s efforts to develop a capability to access low Earth orbit and the International Space Station so that America can once again launch American astronauts on American rockets from American soil.”
Who are they kidding? NASA’s technology cupboard is bare and the funds have essentially be purloined for a space launch vehicle nobody needs nor wants other than as a jobs program together with MPCV which also is not required since it’s essentially a stock standard vehicle that could be provided by a competitively tendered program.
Since SLS is basically a follow-on to the failed Cx Program, these programs have sucked up so much budget that NASA’s not going anywhere for the next decade at least and anyway, Congress and the nation can’t agree on funding a particular pathway or even a single mission anyway.
Thank the gods that Elon and SpaceX came along.

I agree, except to comment that SLS/Orion for all intents and purposes is the Constellaiton program itself rather than a follow-on. If SpaceX can launch the Falcon Heavy within a year from Florida it may begin to change some perspectives.
