Can I just say that while The Martian was very entertaining, and had superb special effects, I do have a problem with the rover. With all that thick metal structure up front, the rover looks like it was designed to drive through trees, bushes, and shrubs, not cruise cautiously over lifeless sand dunes and gravel. And without a hearty winch up front, I’m not sure it’s ready for taking on any sort of serious rock strewn alien wasteland.

Well that applies to pretty much all the hardware in the flick. By
any reasonable budget standards, it was all extravagant and luxurious. A
lounge room in the rotating space station ?.

Agree about the winch, and think that maybe mounting some excavation gear might be a good idea as well.

They do seem kinda similar…if you don’t count how many wheels. 😉

Seems a movie company can afford to build a custom rover. How much did these rivers cost and how much would a real mars rover cost??

I’m guessing the movie rover’s cost less than million and Nasa’s rover will cost a similar price as Orion about 10 billion???
