Sen. Shelby: The King Of Political Cronyism and Hypocrisy

Shelby to oppose spending bill he loaded with goodies, Politico
“Sen. Richard Shelby loaded up the $1.1 trillion spending bill with pet provisions, including one measure worth hundreds of millions to a rocket manufacturer with operations in his home state. The cagey lawmaker also fought hard for language protecting red snapper fisheries on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, even issuing a press release bragging about his efforts. “That is why I fought tirelessly for several provisions to be included in the omnibus appropriations bill that I believe will help respond to the serious challenges facing anyone who wants to fish for red snapper in the Gulf,” Shelby said in the release. But in an only-in-Congress twist, Shelby, a very senior member on the appropriations committee, still plans to vote against the sprawling omnibus package. He’s citing the lack of language to restrict Syrian refugees as the reason.”
McCain furious over Russian rocket engine provision, Politico
“The Arizona Republican is furious with Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) for tucking a provision into the massive 2,000-page bill that allows defense contractor United Launch Alliance to keep buying Russian rocket engines reversing language McCain championed in the National Defense Authorization Act that limited ULA to purchasing nine rocket engines.” … But McCain has accused ULA of manufacturing a crisis to get the law changed by not bidding on the first military satellite launch. On the Senate floor Wednesday, he vowed to take up the issue again in next year’s defense authorization bill threatening a “complete and indefinite” ban on Russian-made engines.”

Its all about exporting energy, the environment vs make a buck.

” Brownsville LNG Export would fuel Climate Change disaster. 6.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gases (GHGs) per year. That’s a conservative estimate of how much three proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) companies would pump into the atmosphere each year in order to liquefy their total capacity of gas for export.”

I wonder how he would vote if it’s close enough for his vote to actually matter. In a just world, the local interests he’s planning on collecting donations and votes from (on account of his Largess) would spurn him on account of his opposing the package.

Sen. Shelby’s closeness with the banking industry is far more worrying than this silliness over rocket engines.

As to his activities protecting the people in his state it is hard to see why this is particularly a bad thing. As a Florida resident I have long wondered if more aggressive behavior by Sens. Rubio and Nelson would have averted the SpaceX activities in Texas, and that so-called ‘spaceport’ in New Mexico in favor of the Cape and related facilities.

He is the very model of a modern-day Republican.

Except for his party switching to preserve committee power positions, being elected more often as a Democrat. Shelby’s only loyalty is Shelby.

If it is not a monstrous typo, the Open Secrets tally of Shelby’s campaign coffers says he has over $ 19,000,000 in the bank and $0 in debt ( !?!?!!) and raised $ 3,000,000 during the last five years but only spent $ 750,000. He really does not need to accept any fundng from any corporation or individual if he’s sitting on that heap like Scrooge McDuck , but I guess the guy is addicted to the stuff. Hypocritical Crony indeed…

Is “Political Cronyism” the feature of congress? As to hypocrisy I am yet to see one person (not just politicians) who is not. Mr. McCain on the other hand, is a fool, very brave but still a fool.
