Breakthrough Listen Follow-up of a Transient Signal from the RATAN-600
“In this memo, we briefly report on our own follow-up observations, undertaken using the new Breakthrough Listen back-end instrument at the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). This preliminary analysis will be followed up in time with a more formal refereed publication of the initial scientific results from Breakthrough Listen.”

    Probably nothing.

But that’s a pretty cool telescope.

I have read elsewhere that the system has a giant planet close to the star, so the likelihood of a habitable world is pretty low, but the signal still needs to be explained.

New reports now saying its a terrestrial signal.

They are about to be hearing the rise of Nazism. I am ashamed. Fortunately the radio is rather long wave and not much leaks thru into space and it is low energy. In 25 years they will hear of atom bombs and genocides with much higher frequency signals. I am ashamed.

You really think an alien species could easily figure out what Nazism was….we can not use earth-centric thinking in trying to assume how a non human mind might work

Human beings are very dangerous and can be very cruel I agree

But just because the are aliens does not make them saintly either

I think any sentient creature listening and watching would figure it out. And whether they do or don’t, I know what we humans do and I retch at the shame of broadcasting ourselves, regardless of the great accomplishments we as humans have also achieved.

That’s a danger in all sorts of relations. You know that you have flaws, sometimes huge ones, but you are embedded by them and don’t want to look bad. I think hiding those flaws is a bad idea. They will know or find out eventually. Trying to hide flaws just makes for hard feelings later on.

We neither should censor (in the case of deliberate attempts at communication), nor, in the case of the by-product transmissions that can be eavesdropped on, can be blocked.
We have been radiating our signals for more than 70 years, and it is rather depressing what is reveals.

Don’t be too speciesist. If there is a civilization on that planet, odd are that they are no more perfect than we are. The idea that they also have horrible and/or very embarrassing events in their own history is as likely as not. If we ever do communicate with an extraterrestrial species, I think understanding that neither one of us is perfect will be a fundamental part of a productive relationship.

I’m just glad the new planets are coming out in HD.
