Family Statement Regarding the Passing of Apollo Astronaut Eugene Cernan, Last Man to Walk on the Moon
“The family of Apollo Astronaut Capt. Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the Moon, announced that he passed away today following ongoing health issues. “It is with very deep sadness that we share the loss of our beloved husband and father,” said Cernan’s family. “Our family is heartbroken, of course, and we truly appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers. Gene, as he was known by so many, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.” “Even at the age of 82, Gene was passionate about sharing his desire to see the continued human exploration of space and encouraged our nation’s leaders and young people to not let him remain the last man to walk on the Moon,” the family continued.”

Gene was always fun and exciting to watch in interviews. I think he did his best to explain what it’s like to actually be in space and to walk on the moon. He truly was one of the very few.

    Gene Cernan RIP and Godspeed
    “We is down among ’em!”

“As I take man’s last step from the surface, back home for some time to come — but we believe not too long into the future — I’d like to just (say) what I believe history will record. That America’s challenge of today has forged man’s destiny of tomorrow. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17.”

Deeply saddened by this news. Gene was an aviator’s aviator, an incredible ambassador for the space program and unwavering in his support for human exploration of space. Godspeed Capt. Cernan.

Years ago, at a Houston Oilers game, I ended up in a concessions line behind Gene Cernan and Alan Shepherd. Nobody seemed to know who they were. We talked football as we waited. Just as they went to place their order, I said “By the way, I work at JSC. It was an honor to meet you.” They smiled, we shook hands, and they went on their way.

Who could seriously look at this photo of Gene and deny we ever went to the moon. God speed Gene Cernan.

The grubby little Hoaxtards are already lining up on YouTube and Vimeo etc to denigrate his memory and the achievements of Apollo. I’d like to enact violence upon them, but Captain Cernan probably wouldn’t like that done in his memory.

Sadly will any of the remaining six moonwalkers be alive when the next bootprint is made on the Moon from any country? Or will the great achievements of Apollo fade into memory and be more of a folk tale parents tell their kids as a goodnight story along with the other fairy tales. Will our stagnation in human spaceflight make the tales of heroics and ingenuity seem far fetched and whimsical? Can an event so far back in history and detached from the technological norms of today still inspire future generations? I hope not but fear with the general myopia of the public Gene and the others will just be tall tales like Paul Bunyan and John Henry.

I met Capt. Cernan a few years ago on a cold Feb.day in Des Moines. He gave a wonderful presentation, and sat for pictures for another hour or so afterwards… He was an amazing man, very deserving of the title of Hero… Fair winds and following seas…

I would recommend to watch, if you have Netflix, a good documentary ‘Last Man on the Moon’ that chronicles Gene.
Truly an American hero and thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Classy guy. Happened to run into his niece 30 years ago back in college; she was dating ‘long-distance’ someone in my section in my dorm. Just ‘Uncle Gene’ to her.

A loss for us all, but thank the heavens that we have so much of him on film and in print.

A memorable story he had in his book about while being interviewed for astronaut position, they asked what was his highest altitude he flown. However, his flights as a Navy aviator were low level attack training missions so he answered (paraphrase), “If you are going to land on the Moon, at some point you have to fly low!” I found it interesting is he turned down opportunity to fly to the Moon a second time after Apollo 10 as a CMP or LMP and gambled to command Apollo 17. Also he had trouble sleeping while on the Moon because it was an incredible experience.
