Mattis: Legislation needed to create ‘space force’, The Hill
“Defense Secretary James Mattis on Wednesday said President’s Trump’s recent direction to establish a “space force” will require work with Congress that has not yet started. “This as you know is going to require legislation and a lot of detailed planning and we’ve not yet begun,” Mattis told reporters outside the Pentagon prior to meeting with his German counterpart. “We’ve clearly got to start the process,” Mattis added, noting that it is among the issues Pentagon leaders will bring up bring up on Friday morning when they meet with National Security Advisor John Bolton.”
Air Force says planning for Space Force will be ‘thorough’ and ‘deliberate’, LA Times
“A letter to airmen signed by Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth Wright said the Air Force looked forward to working with the Defense Department, Congress and other national security partners to “move forward on this planning effort.” However, it said the work to create what could be the sixth branch of the U.S. armed forces would be a “thorough, deliberate and inclusive process.” “As such, we should not expect any immediate moves or changes,” the letter stated. “Our focus must remain on the mission as we continue to accelerate the space warfighting capabilities required to support the National Defense Strategy.”

I think the basic problem with having a business man like Trump in government, is that they are use to telling someone to do something and they do it. Doesn’t matter what you think of the idea, you do it because otherwise you get fired. That’s not how government works, for better or worse.

      Nor should it.

If they simply ignore it, Trump will forget about it in a week or two.

No, because the effort didn’t begin with Trump. He just heard about it recently. A bill to the create the service passed the House a year ago.

For worse, over and over and over, and never shall these humans learn.

Many businesses have gone bust because the CEO made an objectively stupid decision that the organization was obligated to execute.

And many businesses have thrived because the CEO made what appeared to be an objectively stupid decision but turned out to be remarkable foresight regarding an opportunity of growth.

        Your point?

The point being that as a citizen we live in a country where we assume mutual equality and ability to serve.

We do? I think assuming everyone is equally qualified for a given job is a extremely poor idea. Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, but some people are better at a given job than others, and I don’t see assuming otherwise for the sake of “equality” is as a cornerstone of our society.

Government and business are entirely different things. Our current business-crazy mentality (“he never had to meet a payroll!”, as if that is relevant), perhaps- just perhaps- we will figure out that statesmanship and greed are mutually incompatible.

I’m afraid you aren’t going to convince many people with words like “greed.” It just gets people’s backs up. Maybe it would be more productive to talk about self-interest as opposed to interest in some sort of common good. I know that’s just a different way of saying the same thing. But it’s harder for someone to deny being interested in his own welfare than for him to deny being greedy.

I don’t concur that the person you mentioned is best described as a ‘businessman’.

Sounds like another government boondoggle that will just wastes time, money and energy – things that none of us get back. When will these people think more than 2 seconds ahead, try to understand the big picture and see how much waste they directly cause?

Has anyone tried to connect the dots between Trump and the military-industrial-aerospace complex ? Followed the money or the slime trail the lobbyists leave behind them ? Trump does not have the intellect to come up with this ” Space Force” hegemon on his own . Somebody had to get to him. But who ?

I think we can set this theory aside on where the notion for a ‘ Space Force’ was bilge-pumped into Trump’s consciousness stream. He has NOT been contacted by aliens to speak for all mankind because he is the planet’s best neogiator. https://www.factcheck.org/2
