A Short Documentary on the Space Force

Short Doc – Commanding Space: The Story Behind the Space Force, Center for Strategic and International Studies
When President Trump announced plans to create a new military service for space in 2018, it took many by surprise. But the idea of creating a Space Force had been simmering behind the scenes for decades. This short documentary looks at the history of the Space Force debate and how it became a top priority for the Trump administration and some members of Congress.”

Unfortunately it sounds like a good way to spend tax dollars without a definable product.

I keep reading similar comments, Daniel, and yet, there have been plenty of posts, and plenty of statements from DoD itself defining “the product”. In general, “the product” is for the US military to continue getting the “force multiplier” advantages of US MilSpace, in spite of the shift, from Space being a permissive environment, to Space being a non-permissive environment.

That shift is beginning because the PLA has stood up their Strategic Support Force, at the same level as the PLAN and the PLAAF. Meanwhile the Russian Aerospace Force has stood up their “Space Troops”. Both are presently experimenting with tactical options, on-orbit, today, to make US MilSpace assets non-functional.

First strategies to counter present PLASSF experiments in disrupting US advantages have been presented several times.

1.) Proliferating US MilSpace assets, so that disrupting a few dozen satellites in a few hours will not leave US Forces on Earth without Communications, Navigation, and Recon abilities they enjoy today.

2.) Building replacement capabilities that allow individual non-functional assets to be replaced in 3 days, instead of the current average of 3 years.

These are the start, and are far more focused on the age-old military maxim of “Amateurs talk strategy, …Professionals talk logistics” than they are on Bang!, Bang!, …or Pew!, Pew! It is fortunate that our private spaceflight companies are striving to provide reusable, low cost transport for such strategies focused on logistical superiority.

Is it that you do not follow their statements? Or is it that, like so many here in Portland, you do not wish to hear what they say? To see the statements already made, and then see comments like yours, is somewhat confusing.
