When Will The Artemis Open Source Thing Begin?
Keith’s note: So when does the whole “open source” thing begin with regard to NASA’s moon stuff?
FWIW @JimBridenstine is talking about having lunar systems available to the world in an open source fashion yet the majority of details in the NASA RFI for the xEVA suit are not available in an open source fashion https://t.co/uqquSui1nI #artemis #moon2024 pic.twitter.com/gEBCbJkMOj

I suspect that won’t be exclusively on the NASA side. The proposal from industry are likely to be flagged as containing proprietary information. We’re going through this for NASA funded, scientific research and it isn’t fun. There is now a requirement to make any software developed as part of a research grant open source. But given how scientists write code and how they document it, that would be useless to anyone but the author or someone with the author holding his hand. And some of that software is the result of years of work and the basis of someone’s career. So we get idiotic things like requirements to archive new modules and subroutines while the main code is grandfathered and not open source. That’s really useful…
As far as I know all software for government contracts require CMMI level 3 or 4 certification. If that’s true there will be plenty documentation.
I would think that the propulsion systems while most likely proprietary are also ITSR restricted.
Obviously, ITAR. If the propulsion stuff wasn’t restricted, it could be treated more like open source software with 3D printing becoming more prevalent.
