NASA to Pay Tribute to Fallen Heroes with Day of Remembrance
“NASA will honor members of the NASA family who lost their lives while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery, including the crews of Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia, during the agency’s annual Day of Remembrance Thursday, Jan. 30. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, along with other senior agency officials, will lead an observance at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia beginning at 1 p.m. EST. A wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, followed by observances for the Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia crews.”

I’ll never forget the Challenger accident. I was sitting in my 7th grade class. A student came back from the principal’s office saying that the space shuttle exploded. We were all dead silent for what seemed like minutes looking around at each other. Flights almost seemed routine and NASA invincible.

    Always remember.

Not only out of respect for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice; but to prevent (to the extent possible) future losses.

And I get to add another personal mistake. Even though January 30th isn’t an official holiday, I think it should be. And I forget to tell my student that she shouldn’t come in to work. I need to be more careful next year.
