    Don’t start me on the intern process this morning. That’s a large part of the reason of such lack of diversity in the CS ranks.

    Intern/Pathways reqs have an extremely short posting. Unless you are looking at USAJobs on an almost daily basis, or you have inside knowledge of when they will be posted, you will miss out on the opportunity to even apply.

      I can’t speak to NASA internships, but I am familiar with the post-doc fellowships for planetary science. They involve working at a NASA center (not a university deeply involved in a NASA project or even one which is the PI institution for something like a Discovery mission.) I think they do allow people to work “at” a NASA center but spend a large fraction of their time at another institution. A sponsor who works at a NASA center is also expected. In general, the opportunities to apply are known in advance, but given the requirements, that not from reading USAJobs… I see notices on email lists to planetary scientists and members of related professional societies. Between that and the requirements, I guess that could mean you need to “have inside knowledge.” And I agree that this process does not help with diversity.
