Please Consider A Donation To The Hipkin-Rummel Get Well Soon Fund

Keith’s note: I have known John Rummel for 35 years. I first worked with John at the old Life Science Division at NASA Headquarters. John has made an indelible mark on NASA’s search for life in the universe. Vicki was awarded a Distinguished Public Service medal from NASA for her work on the Mars Phoenix mission. Please consider making a donation to help out John and Vicki and their family in this time of need.
“John, Vicky, and kids Tristan and Hannah were in a severe car accident on July 22nd. John and the kids are with Vicky now in Billings, Montana where she is undergoing surgeries to her legs, and where she will be monitored until her doctors can determine a safe release date. John sustained a handful of injuries as well, making it necessary to have a second and third pair of hands available to give Tristan and Hannah the best possible attention and care.”

This is such sad news. It would be hard to find a more sincere, supportive, and better person than John.

I knew John Rummel when he was the head of NASA’s Planetary Protection program, and I once took a field trip/camping vacation with him. (A mutual colleague had a thing for that, organizing visits to locations on Earth which were similar to locations on Mars or other planets.) I’ve also met him at various scientific conferences. I think I can say he is both a great scientist and also a really nice guy with a fine sense of humor.

I deeply regret that my personal finances do not allow me to donate to this effort to support him in this crisis. But I would urge those who are more able than I to do so, to donate some money to this fund. He really is someone who deserves help when he and his family are in this sort of situation.

I just donated. It is a national shame that someone should have to beg for medical help instead of being provided as in every other advanced industrialized country.
