As a student at Utah State University, I had opportunity to work with Gil in his efforts to get student experiments flown on the Space Shuttle in Get Away Special Canisters. Slightly before my time there, Gil purchased GAS Can 001 and donated it to USU; it was flown in 1982. We worked together for a bit at a small company called Globesat. Gil was tireless in his efforts to help students and promote STEM. God speed Gil .. you made a difference in this world.

Met Gil for the second time when I started a Post-Doc at Utah State. Bill Hanson had introduced him to me a few years earlier.
Gil was always generous with time and advice and welcomed our young family to Logan. He was a fount of knowledge to me about everything interesting about Space. Will Miss you Gil.

RIP Gil. His donation of the Space Shuttle Get Away Special canisters was one of the key elements in launching, figuratively and literally, university space programs and student-led flight opportunities. The cubesat work being done in schools today can follow the breadcrumb trail back to Gil.

As former Project Manager for the Shuttle Small Payloads Project Office, home to the Get Away Special and Hitchhiker payloads, I have had the great fortune of knowing Gil since 1988. he flew many times as a GAS customer, as well as a Hitchhiker customer with his StarShine series satellites. Indeed, I was speaking to him just a few months ago; he was looking to find some old unspoken for thermal blanketing materials, perhaps hidden in the stock rooms of GSFC, for a small sat he was building , with , of course, students. That is so typical of Gil…tireless working to share the joys of space exploration with young people, beating the bushes for materials, rides to space, with those he’s made connections and friendships with through out his long and distinguished career.

He was a tireless champion of inspiring the next generation of space explorers; he even invited my own children (back when they were young) to polish a few mirrors for his Starshine-2 satellite, which we eventually flew on STS 108; that was an experience I am forever grateful for.

Where others saw dead ends, Gil saw possibilities. He was always sharing his latest student space exploration adventure, which I found so captivating! I could listen to him for hours. He made such a positive difference in the world, and was an inspiration to me.

I bet right now he is inquiring with God to help him find a launch opportunity for his very first Angel Sat-1!

    RIP Gil!

Gil was just a marvelous person. I first met him when I was 23 and he really helped me onto the path of realizing my dreams. He did that for thousands of people. I cannot say enough nice things about him.
