I will have my fingers crossed until they get the optics aligned.
I do believe most of the risk has been retired…the successful deployment of the nondeterministic sun shield was one of the biggest. Optical alignment should proceed with lower risk because the alignment operation has been tested multiple times after/during exposure to the expected environmental conditions (e.g. vibration, SRS, thermal vacuum, etc.).
Most is not all. So, I will keep my finger crossed.
It was stated in the press event after the final mirror segment latches were locked into place that the calibration images are not going to be released and the STScI will release the first “wow” images once the telescope is fully operational in six months. I think this is a good move to prevent a lot of misinformation floating around.
Me, too. I wonder how many wonderfully-powerful space-based observatories operating in other wavelengths could be built for all the money that’s going to be spent trying to put humans on Mars?
It’s not the usual form on this forum, but I think Northrop Grumman deserves some love here. Webb deployment worked because of the excellent work done at Northrop. Salute!
