“One of President Trump’s economic advisers has an admittedly “crazy” idea for how to reopen the country amid the coronavirus pandemic: space outfits. “I was thinking this morning, and this is just kind of a thought experiment because I was thinking about this — why don’t we just put everybody in a space outfit or something like that?” Moore asked. “No. Seriously.” The Times noted to Miller that “well, we’d have to make the space outfits,” a fact he acknowledged while continuing to spitball. “I mean, just thinking out loud, and maybe this is a crazy idea, but instead of just locking down the economy, putting everybody in a kind of — you’re right,” Moore said. “You have to make 200 million of these, but it wouldn’t have cost $3 trillion to do that. … I mean, I was looking online, and there are all these kinds of suits that they’re building now that you’re not exposed and you’re breath — kind of ventilator.”

  1. I am aware that you are being facetious here and with good reason. On another forum it was suggested that a lightweight positive pressure hood would confer considerable protection against the virus. Prices were said to be in the $1,000.00 and up range. So while a space suit is ridiculous, it might be possible for people in known high risk situations to get a considerable amount of protection with relatively simple gear.

    One of the suggestions was for a positive pressure bubble head jacket with elastic at waist and wrist. Battery pack and filtered fan on the belt. With filtration against pollen, pollution, and dust as well, it could be a preferred solution to some allergy sufferers.

    2. To dial this back to something feasible: a few million positive-pressure filtered full-face masks for the people most at risk would be great to have and entirely practical to produce…if we didn’t have a global pandemic running rampant. We’re having trouble supplying simple paper masks and rubber gloves.

      It would have cost trillions of dollars less to prepare emergency stockpiles ahead of time, but we didn’t do that. We looked at the repeated close calls (SARS, MERS, etc) that should have been taken as warnings and decided that since they didn’t amount to much we didn’t need to worry.

  2. JFC that guy’s an idiot. Last night he talked about using UV light or disinfectant inside infected people. Needless to say, either of these techniques would kill the patient long before it killed the virus. Unfortunately, the people next to him are all too afraid of him to tell him flat out that neither of these would work.

    Don’t inject disinfectant, even if POTUS thinks it needs to be looked into.
