Keith’s note: As of 4:07 pm EDT has 1,604 people taking voluntary separation. The 9th floor has been pushing Center Directors, Directorate AAs, etc. to get more people to quit – a lot more – over 3,000+ more.

They said on Wednesday ~900 took the first round and it was up to ~1500 in the second round, but they made it sound like it was 900 + 1500 = 2400 total… if the number is only 1604 cumulatively, we have a looooong way to go.
If they really want as many people as possible to resign voluntarily now, you’d think they’d just be honest about the RIFs and center closures we all know are being discussed. Saying they’re “trying” to avoid involuntary separation is cover for people to roll the dice.
The Town Hall numbers were correct when given. The second round alone is approximately 1600.
Because leadership is allergic to being straightforward and having the crucial conversations that they have us do training for.
I worked for NASA as a civil servant for a number of years. It’s so unfortunate to see the downward spiral the agency is experiencing from the DOGE purge.
I was an industry representative to NASA years ago. I had a fantastic experience and worked with someone top notch NASA civil servants and contractors. Eventually my funding ran out, and I moved on. But I will always treasure my NASA experiences. Empathy for all those affected by the downsizing.
This is not the first time people having to leave NASA (end of Apollo, end of Cold War) but here we have one or two men decided to reduce the NASA budget. And for the first time in NASA history top management are proceeding with layoff plans before a budget is enacted.
I don’t know whether it’s true but I heard for long term people that retire via DRP, they will not get a signed letter or plaque for their decades of service to NASA. Simply sign final papers and turn in badge and keys.
There is no “by right” gift when you leave or retire, that’s all at the discretion of the supervisor. I retired during COVID after 35 years and it was the “Irish Goodbye” you mention, just left my phone and computer on the desk, took my one box of crap, handed by badge to the guard and that was all she wrote. After the fact we had a lunch and I did get a picture with pins on it that my supervisor had arranged with the graphics department.
