SETI Institute

SETI Institute: “Frank Drake 1930-2022: So many scientists at the SETI Institute and around the world, were inspired to follow their careers because of Frank Drake. Frank not only left his mark on the fields of Astronomy, Astrophysics and SETI, but he left his mark on all of humankind. He dared to pursue one of the most profound, compelling and inspiring questions in all of science and indeed, all of philosophy. NASA’s third science question: ‘Are We Alone?’ might well have been something else were it not for Frank’s pioneering.”

What I found remarkable is Frank Drake was able to pursue SETI, recruit other talented people in this endeavor but he was able to avoid reputation of “UFO chasers.” Besides being very smart PhD, Dr. Drake was able to lecture and present to people with no science background. Of course through the years he along with others were able to grow SETI into an institute to do serious studies from radio detection techniques, how much energy is needed for life forms, formation of lakes, etc. Oh yes, I loved the SETI open houses where Frank served ice cream to visitors. RIP but he lived long enough to see JWST and how it can fill in values to his Drake Equation.
