China sets sights on first manned space station in 2022, CGTN America
“The next frontier of China’s space exploration program – a permanent, manned space station – is expected to be ready for service in 2022. But as this new station readies for launch, another is set to come crashing back to Earth. Keith Cowing, an astrobiologist and editor of NASAWatch.com, discusses this and other Chinese space developments with CGTN’s Elaine Reyes.”
Keith’s note: I need to get some better lighting in my man cave. I look like a tired raccoon.

Lighting is everything… just get a simple 3-light system set up, and you’ll be as good as gold!

Would the workspace at LOIRP have been better lit? It sure would have had a far more distracting background, right?

I prefer you give interviewer good answers instead of good lighting.

It all reminds me of Skylab and Mir, many argue should keep them in orbit. But others say time to move on with new stuff (you only keep an old car because it is a classic). However, maybe design something so not have to let all that mass fall from orbit, then put effort to loft new mass.

No reason why you can’t do both. Just plug one of these into a USB port on your laptop when you video conference. If its too much, you can filter it or reflect it with a sheet of paper or a Kleenex or something…

(Disclaimer: Yes I use them and they are as bright as you need them to be. I receive no benefit from suggesting this product or its variants other than the warm glow of helping my fellow microphone addicts. 😉

All the hysteria over tiangong 1 is just that. I recall Skylab Dropping all over Australia and I don’t think we even got an apology but apparently China are somehow worse. I imagine they have it well tracked and when its close enough to say they will let everyone know if its going to land in a bad location. Chances are it will fall harmlessly into the pacific !

In the case of Skylab, I think Australia got something better than an apology. It got some souvenirs. According to Wikipedia, the San Francisco Examiner bought one for $200,000. Better still, none of the debris was radioactive, which is an improvement over what the Russians accidentally dropped on Canada.

All this raises the question of who owns debris from a reentered spacecraft, especially if it does not land in the country of launch. Does the Outer Space Treaty say anything about that?

I guess the point is China is no worse than any other space faring nation and yet they seem to be getting way more flack !

I’m barely old enough to remember it, but no. NASA got a huge amount of bad press over Skylab. And Kosmos 954 in 1978 was a PR disaster as well as a nuclear one. If anything, China is getting off easy in comparison. Maybe we could make it worse by opening a betting pool on the crash site…

But they also haven’t gotten much attention for the positive aspects of their space program. Chang’e 3/Yutu was, in quite a few ways, very much like Mars Pathfinder/Sojourner. But I think far fewer people have either heard of or remember Yutu than Sojourner.

Beat me to the punch: I think Raccoons have become so cool — especially if they have to do with Rockets…! Wait, wait…that’s Keith…!

Go to Ikea, get a little LED light and Clip it to your monitor. Put it at your face when you Skype. You don’t need more light, you just need light from the right direction.
