Keith’s note: SpaceX just conducted a full duration static test firing of 31 Raptor engines (1 shutdown, 1 was shut down) on Starship producing enough thrust to still reach orbit – the most powerful rocket humans have ever built or fired. Sorry SLS. Video below.

It can get to orbit with 31 engines. Can it get to Mars with 31 engines?

Since the Super Heavy is only for getting Starship to orbit. The answer is YES.
Starship will need to refuel in orbit to get to Mars or the Moon.

And to fully refuel it, that will require another SH launch, this one carrying essentially space tanker (carrying both fuel and oxidizer). So… that would actually mean: in order to go to the Moon or Mars, it’ll take at least 62 engines (assuming engine out on both)!! 🚀🚀😲

Even for one, if they can get that to orbit it’ll not only knock SLS out of the part, but stomp all over the grave of the Soviet N1

Congrats to SpaceX! That’s an important milestone. Looking forward to the launch.
