AIA Presents Wings of Liberty Award to Sen. Richard Shelby
“The Aerospace Industries Association is proud to present the annual “Wings of Liberty” award to Senator Richard C. Shelby of Alabama for his work to ensure funding for defense and non-defense programs vital to our national security and the health of our nation’s aerospace industry. Senator Shelby is currently the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and chairs the Defense Subcommittee. Previously, Senator Shelby chaired the Commerce-Justice-Science Subcommittee, which provides funding for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Transportation Subcommittee which handles the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).”

Your headline is correct. It’s AIA is utterly without shame- and most certainly doesn’t represent a positive future for American aerospace, but just near-term profits for the largest corporations (and, compensation packages for their CEOs….not necessarily in that order).

Maybe if the Dems take the Senate he will retire.

Don’t hold your breath. 2/3 of the seats up are Democrats, many in red states. Looking at the RCP Senate map, the noncompetitive seats give Republicans a 47-44 starting line advantage with 9 undecided and at least 3 Democrats in deep trouble.

You are probably right but Mc Connelly seems to be getting a little antsy. He recently characterized the 9 as “knife fights”.

I’m curious of Shelby’s influence on NOAA and FAA, helpful or not? In many ways these two agencies have more direct impact on everyone than NASA (weather satellites, regulating airlines and ATC).
