NASA Prepares For Possible Government Shutdown

NASA Initial Government Shutdown Planning
“The Administration continues to strongly believe that a lapse in funding should not occur. There is enough time for Congress to prevent a lapse in appropriations, and the Administration is willing to work with Congress to enact a short-term continuing resolution to fund critical Government operations and allow Congress more time to negotiate an agreement that invests in middle-class economic priorities and helps our entire economy grow. However, prudent management requires that we continue to prepare for all contingencies, including the possibility that a lapse could occur at the end of the month.”

Thankfully, with Boehner’s announcement this is now almost certainly irrelevant.

Actually, Boner’s resignation makes a government shutdown very, very, very likely.

Nope, at least not this round. Boehner himself has been opposed to shutdowns, but in the past he had to go along to keep his party happy. But he always has the option of just passing a CR with the help of the democrats, and now that he no longer cares about what the conservative wing thinks of him, that’s very likely what he will do in his final month. As for the future, who can say? Depends who replaces him, though the closer we get to the election the less likely shutdowns get.

After dinner at a restaurant last night Boehner assured a man there will be no shutdown

Amazing, you never see that level of sincerity in Washington. Until he actually leaves, Boehner can now get his bills through. All he has to do is pick up the phone and call Nancy Pelosi.

The truth is that both sides are scared of a shutdown because people might actually learn that it has very, very little effect on their daily lives. All of the critical payment checks still go out …. federal employees get a paid vacation …Republicans get blamed and the media goes along with it. The power of the purse is a major leg in the constitutional balance of power. But, of course, Obama has blatantly violated the constitution on several occasions with executive orders and the Supreme Court just yawns . Shut it down .. who cares

So you would rather just see NASA shut down permanently? I mean, there’s something to be said for that, human spaceflight is hardly a “vital” function of government. Although it is “nice to have”.

Generally civil service are paid retroactively for the shutdown time, but contractors may be forced to use vacation days, if they have them.

Yep. No need for weather satellites in the future. That’s not vital!

That’s NOAA and they have not done a good job recently because, among other things they were forced into Swiss Army Knife design with the AF

It isn’t a certainty that Federal Employees get paid for the time the government was shut down. They might be, might not be. And the shutdown might seem painless at first, but the longer it goes on, the more it will start to impact the average citizen.

I used to get VA education benefits in college and believe me, during a certain shutdown I was a broke student in a bind.
There are people trying to buy homes, for instance – if they’re getting VA or FHA loans approved, forget about it. Not to mention so many others who would be adversely affected – too many to count. This is one of those situations where people don’t seem to care so much unless they’re personally impacted. Then you care A LOT, forget politics

I was also reading about people who have actions being taken by the IRS. All ability to resolve those things would come to a halt during a shutdown – let’s say if your wages were unfairly garnished for instance.

This is just plain silly. The government is hobbled not only by shutdowns but by year after year continuing resolutions, coupled with a stunningly lazy, do-nothing congress sitting on their self-righteous asses and braying about just how ineffective government can be.

With interest rates at historic lows the country should be bonding billions in public construction (at the very least). Nope. Not from these guys who then have the gall to complain that Mr. Boehner wasn’t conservative enough.

        The Pope is here!
        Did you hear!
He took some beads out of my hand!

Why are we in awe of rich guys that steal our money?

Boehner said that since he’s gotten the pope to speak at Congress, he had nothing else he needed to accomplish. Lol, Maybe that means we won’t have a government shutdown because the pope dropped by.

        KING WORSHIP ?

I read as part of his show he was going to some prisons and washing or kissing some prisoners feet? Lol Did that really happen? Face Palm!

Isn’t a large part of SLS just to put a show on for the peasants?

Give us your money, we are going to Mars, Believe!!!

Bonner was never going to have a better day. It is easy to sympathize with his not wanting to return to the House of Pain. Never liked him much, but it is easy to understand what he did

Koshka13: If you actually look at real numbers, George W. Bush violated the constitution FAR more than Obama has with executive orders, and nobody in the media batted an eye.

Like so different from let’s say, civil war, the continental congress? Extreme partisanship, they all go to the same gyms. It is just an excuse.

“All of the critical payment checks still go out …. federal employees get a paid vacation”

Not really, last shutdown many never were compensated. Fed govt budget is huge, fed employees are a small amount of it. Vast majority is purchases and contracts from private companies, all that stops when a shutdown occurs. Private companies go without revenue, and everything from equipment, supplies, their employees sitting around because they cannot access govt facilities. With such a large number of businesses going broke, that’s when complaints become much louder and gets congress attention to restart the government.

The underlying problem is the extreme partisanship demonstrated today in Congress, in which party allegiance and political power are more important than the future of our country.

Some political pundits are saying that a government shut-down is absolutely necessary for the Republicans to prove to their constituents back home that they are in firm control and are angry at something or other.

And anyone in the private sector working on a government contract knows that if the shut-down persists, lay offs are just around the corner once the government’s checks stop coming.

  4. Eli Rabett says:

The effort in the past has been to make shutdowns as painless as possible. Given the dysfunction of the Republican party it may be necessary to make the next one as painful as possible. WRT to nasa closing JPL, Stennis and Kennedy down hard might bring some enlightenment to politicians in those states, or their voters.
