While folks wait for the Congress to Act it appears Acting Administrator Lightfoot is getting the 2018 National Space Trophy.

As a deep-outsider (if that’s a thing), it is very hard, looking at NASA as a whole, to see leadership in any HSF endeavor whatsoever.

I’d ‘d suggest that given the lack of interest and commitment by Obama, the progress they’ve made is remarkable. Kudos to Gerstenmaier and Lightfoot and others for continuing to make incremental HSF progress on SLS and Orion and even the Deep Space Gateway. These systems aren’t perfect, and while some Musk acolytes may see SpaceX as the magic pixie dust, the fact that they have made this slow but steady progress is what will get us back into exploration.

Peripherally relevant: I’ve been slogging through Fire and Fury, which posits that the delay in filling out the Washington ranks is explained by the President’s inability to focus on anything that is not right in front of him.

My own view is simpler: he was so unprepared that he really doesn’t know what’s required; and added with a general distrust of “bureaucrats”, lots of jobs aren’t filled.

    FWIW.
