COVID-19 Government Employee Vaccination Mandate

President Biden to Announce New Actions to Get More Americans Vaccinated and Slow the Spread of the Delta Variant, White House
“Today, the President will announce that to help protect workers and their communities, every federal government employee and onsite contractor will be asked to attest to their vaccination status. Anyone who does not attest to being fully vaccinated will be required to wear a mask on the job no matter their geographic location, physically distance from all other employees and visitors, comply with a weekly or twice weekly screening testing requirement, and be subject to restrictions on official travel.”
Beyer Applauds Vaccination Mandate For Federal Workforce
“U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), who represents the largest number of federal employees of any member of the U.S. House of Representatives, today hailed the Biden-Harris Administration’s announcement of a new requirement a requirement that all federal employees and contractors receive COVID-19 vaccinations or be tested regularly.”
Biden plans to require federal workers to be vaccinated or undergo repeated tests, Washington Post
“We fully endorse a vaccine mandate,” said Paul Shearon, president of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, which represents some 25,000 federal workers at agencies such as NASA and the Defense Department. “We’re in the middle of a pandemic, over 600,000 people are dead, and we don’t want any more of our members dying.”

Good. This pandemic will drag on forever unless pretty much everyone gets vaccinated.

But!!! That’s infringing on people’s rights to be ignorant and keep the virus spreading to others!

We are now in a position where those already vaccinated must mask up in order to protect those who are not vaccinated. What a world.

And this: how is a required Covid shot different from the required childhood immunizations (MMR, etc.) that every kid must have in order to attend public schools?

I don’t know the answer to the question. But I have to say that having to mask up because folks have an anti-vax attitude? It kinda pisses me off.

NASA is all about Unity these days. Consider that what works against Unity is exercise of POWER over others, such as a mandate you must be vaccinated. Which does seem like a good idea.

You know, I’ve been reading Keith’s news site for many decades. As important to me, aside from the insight Keith gives those of us with ‘wanna be’ status – followers of space, lovers of NASA – the comments section brings me back, time and again; it’s populated by a quite divergent group, many experts often willing to answer questions from the likes of me.

The ‘tone’ of the comments section is so important and, aside from Keith’s occasional baseball bat, is largely self-policing. Folks here are informed, and respectful, in the way that, for instance, the comments section over at http://www.arstechnica.com functions (a high bar indeed).

So, a note to other commenters. If you find direct assignation of idiocy from one commenter to another, further reading won’t be to your taste.

Why the foregoing preface? Warning: direct talk follows.

This comment above from @halfmoon is ill-informed and dickish, reflecting an a priori and decidedly not useful attitude sprayed over the internet as a mis-firing shotgun.

There’s a pretense of thoughtfulness that, while missing the mark, contains self-revelatory truth: the commenter is a guy who reads headlines but avoids the actual discussion.

In the guise of conceptually-generated actual *thinking*, it is patently selfish and just plain wrong. It is un-American.

      And it is silly.
