Ad Astra Nichelle Nichols, SpaceRef
Keith’s note: Actress Nichelle Nichols has died at the age of 89. To generations of Star Trek fans she was the iconic Lt. Uhura. To others she was a symbol of emergent racial equality who literally burst through multiple glass ceilings. To others she was the inspiration for people who actually became astronauts. Regardless of how you first encountered her, she was – and always will be – memorable in the best of all possible ways. Ad Astra.

Indeed. My parents were dead set against me going into engineering until my mom walked in the room one day and saw Lt Uhura on Star Trek.

During a visit at Ames Research Center some years ago, Nichelle signed autograph to every person that wanted one. And also posed for pictures for every person that attended. I thought this was very cool she did this for all her fans and others attending her presentation.

Interesting Ms. Nichols formed her business Women In Motion rather than have a NASA PR introduce her to the podium to give a talk.
