Space Is Now An Official Republican Election Meme

Keith’s note: Last week it was Space Force merchandise from the Trump 2020 campaign. Now, it looks like the NRCC (National Republican Congressional Committee) has jumped on the whole space thing. The fact that we no longer fly this particular space vehicle seems to be of minor importance. But hey, we now get to say SPACE FORCE all the time.

This is why I don’t think the Space Force will amount to much. Why go through all the difficult work of actually creating it (much less getting funding through Congress), when you can just say that you created it, cash in with merchandise, and then use it to fund-raise?

It has a great slogan, gets lots of people to create all kinds of artwork and merchandise, then Trump shows up for the photo op and takes all the credit.

Exactly. All the PR boost, none of the hard work necessary as long as none of the press organizations bother to follow up on it in a few weeks.

Apparently Shuttle is the closest thing the US has to advanced space tech to show off ! Even today, 35+ years after the first flight. They might have used an Orion picture, except Orion is still only a paper rocket and there is nothing more than artwork, even 13 years after its inception. And no one knows what its mission is, why, or when or if it will ever happen.

I have already said as much. I know people here are taking it seriously, but trump is not. To him, “Space Force! Space Force!” is just a new slogan, like “Make America Great Again”, to drive his followers at his rallies.

BTW, many people on Twitter have pointed out that that is the Columbia in the picture. Perhaps oddly fitting, if a bit misguided on the part of the person who made the graphic. At least he or she didn’t use a Challenger launch.

I like the idea that a space theme is considered a positive image for elections regardless of who uses it. It means there will be support for space activities.

No, it means uninformed people will be making campaign contributions thinking it will boost the space program, when in reality the opposite will probably be true.

Either the NRCC is tone deaf ignorant or perhaps they’re purposely undermining the president. It’s hard to believe the NRCC is this inept.

Even Texas removed the shuttle from their license plates.

Most folks associate NASA with launching astronauts, and this is a reminder that under President Obama’s Administration America lost the capability to do so. Yes, the decision was made under the Bush Administration, was bipartisan and there are many reasons it has taken so long to be able to launch Americans into space on American rockets, but few voters are that knowledgeable of space policy or even care about such details. For them the Space Shuttle was a point of pride for America and a symbol of its global leadership, and it ended under the Obama Administration and the Democrats. This reminds voters of it and that is just what it is suppose to do.

Few knowledgeable voters means they will believe Trump had something to do with Commercial Crew and SLS/Orion when in reality he’s done nothing except try to get a crew on EM-1 so he’d have something to brag about.

Trump’s expertise is in conveying image. He isn’t even bothering to brag about Commercial Crew or Orion, which are at least current programs. Instead he is taking credit for the Space Shuttle because the picture conveys the image of American strength and power more effectively than an F9 or Atlas, and his supporters will either assume it is his accomplishment or just absorb the emotional message.

To make it non partisan the democrats should also use space rocket pictures in their emailers.
