Another CASIS Event No One Knows About (Update)

Keith’s note: On Wednesday 21 October there will be another unpublicized NASA-funded/supported FISO telecon “CASIS: Enabling Research on the ISS National Lab for the Benefit of Earth“. There is no mention of this telecon at the GSFC website (where telecon sponsor Harley Thronson works), at NASA HQ’s Calendar (which is empty for October anyway), at the ISS national Laboratory’s webpage – or (no surprise) at CASIS. How strange: CASIS spent $862,234 on advertising in 2013 and yet it has yet to find a way to send an email out to these obvious websites (and news media, “stakeholders”, etc.) to notify them of public events wherein the topic of using the ISS will be discussed? What are they spending all of this advertising money on since no one seems to know what they are doing?

I know Mike Roberts and he is a capable researcher. Maybe it would be worth watching. Let’s get the word out.

You really have to wonder a couple things.

First, the FISO telecon is usually a presentation to people already engaged in space activities-particularly space vehicle design. Is that the audience CASIS needs to be soliciting? Why CASIS and not people from NASA or its contractor community representing the ISS Program?

Second, Mike Roberts is a scientist. If CASIS is about streamlining the way for researchers onto the ISS, is a researcher the sort of person needed or would someone who knows the ISS process and organization be the right sort of expert?

It appears from the CASIS website that Roberts has been with CASIS for two or three years, maybe longer. So far CASIS has not had much success from what I can see. Are they trying new things or do they just keep doing the same thing over and over again? If so, why expect any changes?
