Connecting From Space – The Chris Hadfield Effect
Chris Hadfield Quote Turned Into Cartoon By Zen Pencils, Huffington Post
“More than a few of us Earthlings have found ourselves thoroughly inspired by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield as he zooms around our planet aboard the International Space Station, tweeting all the way.
Aside from providing us with breath-taking photos of the Earth and a gravity-free cooking lesson, Hadfield has been doling out advice to his young fans with off-planet ambitions.
During a recent Reddit AMA, Hadfield was asked to give advice for young people considering a career in space science, and his heartfelt answer hit Australian artist Gaving Aung Than hard.”
Marc’s note: Chris Hadfield is not the first astronaut to inspire a younger generation. However with the social media tools available now along with almost weekly live interactions with youth, has fostered a following like no astronaut before him. The repeated messages, of which the central one has been turned into this cartoon, is hitting home. Keep up the good work @cmdr_hadfield.
Young people need heroes who can inspire them in terms they understand. I think that the Commander is doing that very nicely.
It doesn’t seem like Hadfield does much actual work. Might be a story there for NASA Watch…
Tim:
More likely Mr. Hadfield doesn’t get much sleep is probably closer to the truth. Take into account that direct internet access to the station is just now becoming routine. Add to that, being Canadian and all, he doesn’t have NASA PR flacks riding on his every word.
Granted, he is an overachiever like most astronauts. One project he worked on in the ’90’s was helping design, build and install the ‘glass cockpit’ into the Space Shuttles.

NASA TV today showed him busy in the microgravity glove box setting up one of the experiments that came up on Dragon. I think they are all hyper-smart expert multitaskers. They seem to get ahead of timeline a lot. Don Pettit did a lot of free-time science activities.
Folks:
And if that don’t beat all, he’s doing part-time piece work for the tax department on the side! (He is a in the civil service after all)

ROTFL
It seems like the Canucks get to do all the fun stuff on ISS. But seriously, youtube video highlighted by Tinker as example of bringing awareness through other means. Who knows how many viewers first unaware and decide to search for more on ISS, find various articles, documents, what was done, and what could have been done, etc.
