Keith’s note: The State Department is urging Americans to not travel to Russia and if they are in Russia, to leave as soon as possible. As we all know, NASA has a number of personnel and astronauts in various locations for training and support of the International Space Station program. Alerts below:

U.S. Embassy Moscow, Russia (September 27, 2022), US. Embassy and Consulates In Russia

“U.S. citizens should not travel to Russia and those residing or travelling in Russia should depart Russia immediately while limited commercial travel options remain.”

Russia Travel Advisory – Level 4: Do Not Travel, State Department

“Do not travel to Russia due to the unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces, the potential for harassment against U.S. citizens by Russian government security officials, the singling out of U.S. citizens in Russia by Russian government security officials including for detention, the arbitrary enforcement of local law, limited flights into and out of Russia, the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia, COVID-19-related restrictions, and terrorism. U.S. citizens residing or travelling in Russia should depart Russia immediately. Exercise increased caution due to wrongful detentions.”

I suppose getting drafted into Russia’s military is included under ‘detention’ and ‘arbitrary enforcement of local law’. Like the rest of his regime Putin’s draft officers aren’t picky about following the law, so minor details like ‘not being a Russian citizen’ aren’t likely to mean much. Dual citizens are of course screwed.

There have been multiple reports of situations where non-qualified men were drafted (too old, ill, no previous battle experience) by local draft boards and were released when they were examined for induction. Some local draft officials have been dismissed. It’s a mistake to think of Putin’s Russia as been completely incompetent. It lulls people into a false sense of security.

I’ve made multiple trips into the country over the years, but I could not imagine traveling there again under the current leadership. Prayers that NASA’s people continue to remain safe. Krikalëv’s recent comments on the future of ISS seem to indicate that cooler heads are prevailing at Roscosmos, but you never know what might go down (or rain from the sky) with little to no notice these days.
