Secure resources and funding, and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016, We The People, White House
“Those who sign here petition the United States government to secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016. By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.”
Keith’s 7 Dec note: It would seem that the vast majority of the 5,118 6,111 8,709 10,823 14,108 25,000 signers of this petition are male.
Death Star petition on White House website succeeds
“The petition, which calls for the administration to “begin construction of a Death Star by 2016, crossed the mark Thursday for 25,227 signatures, which is the level the White House requires before it will respond.”
Hey – Let's Make NASA Build a Deathstar! (Update)
Comments are closed.

But I suggest that we address the under-protected thermal exhaust vent on that equatorial trench, even if it takes a change order.
Yes meekgee, this project would give KSC NASA security something to do then give speeding tickets to folks already worried about their job. But then “KSC SWAT” might over react like they did when the navy seals blew them out of the water and planted fake bombs on the pad and KSC security did not even know it. What a bunch of losers!!!
A Ringworld would be much more fun.
That might be too big. Besides, it is a big hole in the middle. Of course, that could be good too as the earth could preside just inside the ring and we could dominate the entire planet at one time.
And we could use Fist of God Mountain to get real cheap access to space — just climb to the top and let go!
Then there would be a mission for that SLS thing?
Yeah; They could make SLS part of the scenery. Sort of like Disneyland.
NASA is the wrong agency for this. Weapons procurement is performed by the Pentagon.
What would they name it? Redneck Rendezvous, perhaps?
Oh silly me. I thought the first big thing in space should be a farm built out reusable heavy lifters. I forgot this was for the human tribes of earth!
Randal: A construction job of that magnitude would require a
helluva lot more manpower than the Imperial army had to offer. I’ll bet
there were independent contractors working on that thing: plumbers,
aluminum siders, roofers.
Dante: Not just Imperials, is what you’re getting at.
Randal: Exactly. In order to get it built quickly and quietly
they’d hire anybody who could do the job. Do you think the average storm
trooper knows how to install a toilet main? All they know is killing
and white uniforms.
Dante: All right, so even if independent contractors are working on the Death Star, why are you uneasy with its destruction?
Randal: All those innocent contractors hired to do a job were killed- casualties of a war they had nothing to do with. All right, look-you’re a roofer, and some juicy government contract
comes your way; you got the wife and kids and the two-story in
suburbia-this is a government contract, which means all sorts of
benefits. All of a sudden these left-wing militants blast you with
lasers and wipe out everyone within a three-mile radius. You didn’t ask
for that. You have no personal politics. You’re just trying to scrape
out a living.
Blue-Collar Man: Excuse me. I don’t mean to interrupt, but what were you talking about?
Randal: The ending of Return of the Jedi.
Dante: My friend is trying to convince me that any contractors
working on the uncompleted Death Star were innocent victims when the
space station was destroyed by the rebels.
Blue-Collar Man: Well, I’m a contractor myself. I’m a roofer… You know, any contractor willing to work on that Death Star knew
the risks. If they were killed, it was their own fault. A roofer listens to this… (taps his heart) not his wallet.
Can the US government afford to pay the royalties to Lucas Film? Just using the name ‘Droid’ cost someone at a few cell phone manufacturers and popular internet search engine a lot of money.
better idea, entice the Chinese into thinking there is a benefit to building a DS as their next grand Military project as a follow-on to their aircraft carrier. IN this way there power does not grow (probably shrinks) and the US can reduce its military budget. Oh BTW the DT is Sci-Fi.
And fans are already building a Millenium Falcon to go with it.

I think it was as far back as the mid-60s that just about everyone agreed that orbit was a bad place to put a ‘battle station’ because of the limits of orbital mechanics. Surface-based ballistic missiles and multiple small satellites in polar orbits are nearly immeasurably better.
Of course, the people who sign off on this sort of petition are unlikely to know facts like this
Ben,
I would have thought that the “best” location for defenses would depend on where your attackers are coming from, since that will determine their approach velocity and profile. For example, the faster they hit near Earth space, the farther out you want to be in order to give maximum intercept time, but not so far out that they can get in behind you easily.
The disadvantage of surface-based defenses is that you don’t have direct line-of-sight to incoming spacecraft/weapons. This means that sensors must be relayed >2/3 of the time and weapons launch loses time and delta-V clearing the planet’s horizon.
Of course, serious defense will want a combination of facilities at various locations on and off planet.
Steve
If we did, NASA would name it something cute like “Ingenuity”.
I imagine the planet-destroying laser would have an cute acronym name too like E.W.O.C-> “Extra Wide Orbital Cannon”
And instead of actually destroying rebel held planets, they would mostly spend time building Lego Death Star sets in orbit to inspire children, the next generation of superweapon designing engineers.
Jonathan,
It seems you’re still hung up on the Curiosity name for MSL. The name was suggested by a young girl and NASA went with it. Some of us consider that a good move, an investment in the future. Until space becomes something that the common people, of all ages, get involved with and interested in things are going to change very little from what they have been, which has been pretty dismal compared to what they could have been.
Steve
And the CEOs are to busy sending our jobs over seas and automating us out of our jobs so we can’t pay any taxes lololol
Fun fun
I Ain’t paying for it!!!
Gimme gimmee !!!
