U.S. satellite launcher gets first request for Vulcan rocket – change the name, Reuters
“Hours after unveiling its next-generation “Vulcan” rocket, the company that launches most of America’s satellites, United Launch Alliance, ran into its first problem – the rocket’s name. “Vulcan is a trademark of Vulcan Inc. and we have informed ULA of our trademark rights,” Chuck Beames, president of the Paul Allen-backed Vulcan Aerospace told Reuters. “Paul Allen and Vulcan were early leaders within space exploration with the launch of SpaceShipOne more than a decade ago. We are flattered by ULA’s tribute to our legacy by naming their new rocket ‘Vulcan,'” Beames added.”

  1. It seems all the good rocket names are already taken (however, dig into some obscure math and science books for words that sound cool even if they don’t make sense, i.e. phasor).

  2. Recommended ULA Google search: “vulcan does anyone else have that name under copyright?” First answer: YES. These are strange mistakes.

  3. There’s also Ariane’s Vulcain family of engines.

    Sweet move by Paul Allen and Co. to wait for the ULA announcement and then drop the hammer.

  5. What about RAGNAROCKET! Ahahaha… surely too ominous a name though. Although Ragnar means “warrior from the gods” or “strong army” which would be cool, there is Ragnarok which is the final battle with all kinds of bad stuff.

    I freakin love that show. Season 3 is starting to fill up my DVR to be watched in bigger chunks soon 🙂
