Space Community Braces For Another U.S. Transition, Aviation week
“White House staffers have told reporters Obama wants to leave his successor “a clean barn” without the financial and foreign policy troubles he inherited. Although civil spaceflight has not been a White House priority under Obama, Bolden is trying to emulate the clean-barn pattern at NASA.”

  1. By my reckoning Obama has failed to resolve a single one of the “foreign policy troubles he inherited.” But he has been unstinting in creating new ones. Ditto for the “financial troubles he inherited.” His predecessor doubled the national debt. Obama more than doubled it yet again. This guy’s “barn” makes the Augean Stables look like a warm-up exercise.

  2. So how does one clean the barn of a congressionally mandated $4 billion a year make work program ?

  3. Let’s see, under Bolden, the 30 year Shuttle program wound down without loss of critical skills needed to safely complete its ISS manifest and service Hubble one last time. JWST, after years of problems got on a re-plan schedule and looks likely to be ready for its 2018 launch, a nuclear powered rover was sent to Mars and has been working well for years, the COTS ISS resupply program, started under Griffin, successfully went into commercial service – enabling SpaceX and Orbital to have a customer base for their new rockets – and the Commercial Crew Program was awarded and looks on track to start launching astronauts within two years.

Meanwhile, the ISS partnership with Russia was maintained even as Putin’s adventurism brought Russia and NATO closer to war since the fall of the Soviet Union and oh, by the way, Orion and SLS continued to make slow but steady progress – even as NASA’s aeronautics program finally got some OMB love. NASA’s budget also grew from $17.8B under GW Bush/Griffen to its current level of $19.3B. I’m sure NASA isn’t perfect under Bolden or any Administrator but it has accomplished a lot and the Hill and the White House have recognized this by increasing its funding. Looks like a pretty clean barn to me.
