Keith’s note: Yesterday the President told the United Nations that he wants to use the halt use of “AI” or “Artificial Intelligence”: “From this point forward, all of United States documents and hopefully the world’s will be changed to use the much more accurate term “super” as opposed to artificial. So it’s super intelligence.”
Well, its official now, I guess. In posted prepared remarks at the UN, presidential Science Advisor and OSTP Director Kratsios opened by saying “I am grateful for another opportunity to discuss the most consequential technological development of our time – superintelligence, formerly known as AI.” He then used “super intelligence” 9 times in a 573 word speech to make sure everyone knows he got the vocabulary memo.
This is going to be confusing since POTUS also wants to appoint an “AI Czar” to run a “AI Force”.
So will there be a formal Executive Order mandating this official vocabulary change? When will NASA and the rest of the Federal Government have to start to change its websites? Will we now say “SI” instead of “AI”? “SI” also means “yes” in Spanish, Italian, and other languages. FWIW “SI” – a common global acronym – which stands for Système International d’Unités, which is French for the International System of Units.
There is one bright side – last year Education Secretary McMahon said “A1” (like the steak sauce) instead of “AI” in a presentation. She won’t be confused any more.
