John Mankins Departs

NASA Internal Memo: John Mankins Departs NASA

"I have decided that it is time for a change. Today, September 23, 2005, is my last day with the Agency."

"A new mantra Steidle said from the onset that he was going to learn from NASA's successes and mistakes, and implement a plan in a way which would soon be coined in a new agency mantra 'affordable sustainable credible'. Mantras can lull people into a false sense of security and eventually get NASA into trouble - and you have only to look at the previous agency motto to see just how much hubris was embodied in this new one. During the June Industry Day, long time NASA advanced policy guru John Mankins - a forward-looking survivor who had managed to keep the faith during the Goldin years - summed it up perfectly, "We don't want to get into the situation we were in a decade ago with the agency's 'better-faster-cheaper' mantra - one wherein people were told you can have any two of the three - but not all three."
