Icon Updates Needed on ISS

“NASA astronaut Dan Burbank, Expedition 30 commander, plays a guitar, while Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, flight engineer, plays a musical keyboard during off-time in the Unity node of the International Space Station.” ISS030-E-267658 (21 April 2012) — high res (1.4 M) low res (109 K)
Keith’s note: There are several labels in this photo of the ISS that need updating. With Dragon and other crewed spacecraft soon to be visiting ISS, the evacuation spacecraft pointers need to be updated – including the deletion of the shuttle icon too – as well as the “HAB” pointer.

The four vehicle icons should be for two Soyuzes, and two future US vehicles.

The three Soyuzes currently pictured (which point to the FGB, DC-1, and SM docking ports) should be adjusted to change FGB to MRM-1, add MRM-2, and remove the SM, since Soyuzes only dock to MRM-1 and MRM-2 now.

With regard the “TO HAB” sign at Node 1 Nadir, that likely won’t be replaced with “TO PMM” since PMM will likely be moving in the future, with the Cupola taking its place at Node 1 Nadir. As such, there isn’t much point changing the labelling now, only to have to change it in future.

The “TO CUP” previously seen on Node 1 Port was replaced with “TO NOD3” back in 2010. However “TO CAM” still exists on Node 2 Zenith – as does “TO MPLM” on Node 2 Nadir – both of which should now be replaced with “TO VV” (Visiting Vehicle).

However, I imagine the ISS crew neither need these signs, nor wish to spend their time changing them all over. 😉

“However, I imagine the ISS crew neither need these signs, nor wish to spend their time changing them all over.”

It occurs to me that changing them could actually make them less useful, since it’s their familiarity that would be used for orientation, rather than their content.

(It’s like the old joke about giving directions to travellers, “Go up where the canning factory used to be, turn left at the old Johnson place…”)
