I’m guessing the mayan count base is xx.20.20.18.20, and this cycle just went from 12 to 13.
notice 18*20=360, or a lunar calendar year. after that, every 20×20=400 years they cycle the “xx”, and we’re at 12*400 = 4800 since they started counting, which would make them about Egyptian-old.
Misinterpretation of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is the basis for a popular belief that a cataclysm will take place on December 21, 2012. December 21, 2012 is simply the day that the calendar will go to the next b’ak’tun, at Long Count 13.0.0.0.0. The date on which the calendar will go to the next piktun (a complete series of 20 b’ak’tuns), at Long Count 1.0.0.0.0.0, will be on October 13, 4772 http://en.wikipedia.org/wik…
One Mayan baktun in the Long Count is 144,000 days , or 394.x years give or take. The last time the baktun reset was shortly after the Spanish had begun decimating the remnants of the Mayan city states. The baktun reset before that came when the culture had begun a rather precipitous decline with great tumult. So there is little incentive for the Mayans to reset their Long Count anew, because the last two baktuns have not been all that productive for them.
This whole baktun reset thing is no different than watching the hour-minute-second hand of your family’s heirloom Grandfather clock all turn straight up to 12 at the same moment
Besides, the Mayans all wear digital watches now , and get free calendars at the hardware store with nice pretty pictures of the Grand Canyon on them…
Not sure I understand the joke. Of course, I can’t read Voyagerese.

I have no idea how much of this I got right…
