Really Nice Words about ISEE-3 from Space News

ISEE-3 Reboot Project Is Already a Winner, editorial, Space News
“Inspiration is a word that gets bandied about a lot in the space business, often as justification for multibillion-dollar programs that never come to fruition, let alone inspire. … Whatever the final outcome, the ISEE-3 Reboot Project has already succeeded in attracting an audience that the space community often has a hard time reaching. Credit the team, for having the vision and gumption to pull this off, and NASA, which hasn’t always embraced these types of nontraditional endeavors. Together they have shown how prolific a little inspiration can be.”

“gadfly blogger” Keith Cowling? Nice… 🙂

A characterization perhaps once (a decade ago) at least partly correct. But it’s fair to say that Mr. Cowing has graduated.

Except for the spelling, but the article got that right.

How about NASA getting along with the gadfly blogger enough to enable this to go forward? lol.Good for them.

This has been a fantastic effort and one well and truly worthy of the term ‘inspirational’. It goes to show what can be achieved without bucket loads of money.
    Cheers

WAIT JUST A MINUTE MR. COWING. Do I understand this correctly. “The group secured NASA’s formal blessing and assistance in the form of a Space Act Agreement.” Have you gotten a visit from the OIG yet? [OIG Finds Problems With Space Act Agreements] You are perpetuating a bad NASA habit. Bad boy, very bad boy <g>

How’d you folks come up with the idea of rebooting ISEE-3? And why that particular probe? Magnetic field interactions with the solar wind is a pretty abstruse area to get excited about.

It was the only one in interplanetary space coming back to the Earth in August 2014 that NASA did not have the money to save.

The ISEE-3 is a historic spacecraft and its design is quite interesting. For a low cost spacecraft to survive 36 years in interplanetary space is an amazing feat and as an engineer/physicist that interests me.

Oh, and I really do love solar physics…
