“My family and I are praying for the students, teachers “

And so are we all, Congressman. So are we all.

In the awfulness of the thing, I just feel so helpless.

Don’t feel helpless. Take action. Insanity is doing nothing and expecting things to change.

We’re the only civilized nation on the planet where this keeps happening. The data is clear, but the politicians won’t act. This time around the politicians seem to be focusing on doors (because this school had two armed officers on duty). Yeah, that’s it, too many doors killed the students. SMH.

Actually that’s not the case- that it only happens here; I can think of cases in Australia, for instance, as well as England, and Italy. Here’s a better compilation (and it is shocking):

The other day I heard an assertion by David Broder that the incidence of school shooting and similar incidents was decreasing. This is a stunning assertion by a reliable source. So, I started doing a bit of research.

(The key international words are “rampage” as well as “mass-shooting”).

And it looks like he is right. Much depends on how you define the event, but still, there’s been no incidence ‘bump’.

What HAS happened, though, is this: we have managed to terrify ourselves and more to the point we have terrified our kids. One site called PsychLaw estimated the odds of any single student dying in a shooting at around 1 in 7.8 million.

OTOH, and from the same site:

…Even though your child probably won’t get shot, the chances of someone’s child getting shot at school in the next year is extremely high (around 85-90%).

And THAT should scare all of us.

          Here are some other numbers.

Sort by “homicides” and you’ll see that the US is pretty much the #1 developed nation as far as the firearm death rate for homicides is concerned. We’re a factor of 5 higher than Israel and a factor of 8 higher than Canada. As for the countries you mentioned above, we’re a factor of 13 higher than Italy, 25 higher than Australia, and a factor of 77 higher than the U.K.

In the big scheme of things our homicide rate is still only 4.62 per 100,000 citizens, but that’s still a non-trivial number and the empirical evidence suggests we could do better.

Me: maybe I was wrong maybe Bridenstine isn’t a typical republican afterall.
